TECHARENA - Is the new Moto G6 Play a good buy?

The 6th gen Moto G smartphones are actually upto something. And that can be seen in their hardware upgrades, which is nothing like the previous generation Moto smartphones. Like the other G6 series phones, the G6 play also sports some good hardware and a special upgrade for the camera that most budget phones miss out (and that's where you get disappointment on buying one).

The Moto G6 play combines sufficient performance with a capable camera for a good price, just like the E5 plus. Else for the previous G4 play, which was quite a good phone, that did not meet the actual budget expectations, though that was 2 years ago. But this time, the G6 play did. It comes with a Snapdragon 430 (snapdragon 425 for USA variant) Chipset for providing all the power needed, an improved 13MP camera and a big 4000mAh battery with fast charging. Well specifications seem good, but is it a good buy? or just a waste of money? Read below

Is the new Moto G6 Play a good buy???

Provided that most budget Moto phones do come in plastic body, the G6 Play comes in a more beautiful one. But as for the budget segment, it is plastic indeed, but the body gets a good shape with comfortable round edged corners and the more steeper side edges which makes it look like a metallic phone. So no more cheap looks. Also, the body is splash resistant and it counts as one of the best features of the body. The G6 play indeed feels awesome in hand giving the feel of the actual metallic G6 plus, with good grips and a very comfortable hold.
The Moto G6 Play is one of the best looking phones in the budget category

The G6 play sports a trendy Full Body display just like the other G6 series phones. And that's an advantage for users who want a Full body display experience without paying much of the price. The size is around 5.7inch with a 720p resolution(no 1080p, but thats good for the GPU) in 18:9 ratio with Gorilla Glass protection(not just a scratch resistant one). Well, a Full body display does provide an intense experience when watching high quality movies, videos,  playing games, when using the camera for shooting photographs (which would also be amazing).

The G6 play may not be sporting a top line chipset, but it has sufficient power to run everything. It comes with  the Snapdragon 430 octacore chipset (snapdragon 425 for the USA variant) that has eight 1.8Ghz Cortex-A53 cores with a Adreno 505 GPu. The processors are enough for running almost everything fluently, along with games much more fluently on that 720 screen. The 430 is not a bad chipset at all, it has lower clocked power efficient cores with individual single core active system that can save a lot of battery life (during idle time, which modern chipsets don't do). Most budget phones do come with the Snapdragon 430 and they perform well enough (Nokia 6 which performs amazing). Plus, there is a 3GB RAM varitant if you need more RAM, the G6 play has stock android onboard which gives bit more performance than UI stacked. Storage includes a 32GB pack or else there is a SD card option for upto 256GB support.  Thus, the G6 play seems to be sufficiently powerful for running the android OS fluently (the snapdragon 425 version too performs well and provides better battery performance the 430 version due to its lower cores).

The G6 play has a highly improved camera from the previous generation G play phone and this is where it excels out. The module is a single 13MP with f/2.0 wide lens and a 1/3" sensor with Phase Detection AutoFocus with HDR. So, no fancy dual setup , instead Moto made the single 13MP better with detailing, colours and the camera's abilities to shoot better at low light. And that turns out, since the G6 play shoots amazing photos with quality details, accurate colours no matter whatever be the lighting conditions. Even low light performance is better than most of the phones you can think of buying at 12k. Also, the rear camera comes with quality 1080p FULL HD video recording at 30fps (no slo-mo though, but that will come out in future upgrades, if Moto gives it). The front camera is an 8MP f/2.0 lens (5MP f/2.0 lens for USA variant) with 1080p recording and a LED flash for better selfies at any light. The G6 play thus, finally gets an improved camera which stands out for its key selling point .

The G6 Play has a very capable 13MP camera

The battery is the G6 play is no ordinary pack, but its a big 4000mAh pack and thats another selling point of the mini beast. The 4000mAh pack is much more needed in budget smartphones since only few come with such a big pack. Although, the 430 is not so fabrication type efficient  (like the latest chipsets), its efficient on the core side as it unlocks only 1-2 core when no tasks are running and this provides better battery life. Also, the stock android Oreo OS provides better battery optimizations tricks to further lessen the battery consumption.

     Also for once again, the Moto G6 Play seems a good buy because of ;

1. A very good Body design.
2. A Full Body display.
3. Splash Resistance.
4. Sufficiently powerful chipset.
5. Very Good camera for the price.
6. Big 4000mAh battery.
7. Fast charging.

And YES, the Moto G6 Play is a good buy provided that most of the specs are inferior, the better ones make up for it, since most budget phones dont come with such goods (atleast Moto didn't provide before).

Why the Helio P60 is a big deal in the Realme 1 ?

The Oppo Realme 1 came out recently. Probably with other Oppo  Phones but it somehow didn't fit the budget category, not even the lower midrange. Earlier we had simple more numbered power efficient core chipsets manufactured on smaller fabrication sizes so as to increase battery life. Exynos 7870 was the best battery efficient chipset used on any budget phone than the more famous Snapdragon 625 (also 626, recent 450, 630). It still being used inspite of better ones already there like the Exynos 7880 or the 7885. Well, Mediatek's chips in budgets had a higher number of cores always, like the Helio X25,X23 but its recent chips are somewhat different.        More and more battery life along with limitless processing power, this is what we have always wanted in our phones. No matter who did it. Well actually the less famous Mediatek did that for once. The new Helio P60 (and the P30) announced came with some incredib...
